Captive Audience is Captivated

A Sermon Series on the Apostles' Creed

At Faith Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania, one pastor has found An Apostles' Creed for the New Millennium invaluable for a sermon series, and to recruit students for more Bible study. Pastor Joyce Nelson related the following in a recent e-mail to Dr. Wendt:

"I'm reporting in on my use of An Apostles' Creed for the New Millennium . As you remember, I decided to take advantage of a captive audience and preach the contents of the book.

"I turned each chapter into a sermon with [an] introductory attention-getter and a conclusion. After the first sermon—chapter 1 wowed them—I had them hooked for the next three. I had our soloist sing 'Day by Day' from Godspell at the conclusion of the fourth sermon: 'Day by day, three things I pray: to see thee more clearly, to love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day…'

"We created a set of banners for the front wall of the chancel to go with the series. "With the last bulletin insert, we promoted our upcoming presentation of the 8-session video series, See Through the Scriptures®, which will begin September 26. (Our second-year catechetics class will be doing the regular STS… ).

"Now…the reaction was VERY POSITIVE. Some folks told me things had become so much more clear in their minds about each of the persons of the Trinity!

"I feel really good about the series, because it is so easy to adapt into great sermons that then reach (in our case) 120 people—probably more than 100 of whom would not have signed up to attend STS (though some might now because they understand the art and the concept of the Crossways [International] studies better).

"I am convinced [that] so many more people would be reached and helped in their confessional life this way. I have decided to use this book with my first-year catechetical classes, and have already secured the materials.

"Again, THANK YOU…for you, and for how you are allowing God to use you. The Kingdom is a little brighter in many lives because of the clarity and return to challenging truth you allow the Scriptures to speak through you."

EXPERIMENTING WITH CONFIRMATION CURRICULUM

While most confirmation teachers stick with one CI curriculum (usually See Through the Scriptures® or The Divine Drama®), Pastor Neil Lindorff of Sheyenne/Oberon Ministry in Sheyenne, North Dakota uses an amalgamation of courses. They include:

Pastor Lindorff takes twice the recommended amount of time for each course. He finds that this combination of courses gives his students a bigger picture of the Bible's story.
